About us

The Department of Open & Distance Learning (DODL) is based at the School of Distance & Lifelong Learning (SODLL) .  It was established in 1992 with the mandate to handle the administrative requirements of the then two External Programs of Makerere University, the Bachelor of Commerce External and Bachelor of Education External, which had been launched in 1991.

Over the years, the Department of Open & Distance Learning has grown both in the number of students handled and the activities required of an efficient Open & Distance Learning Programme. These activities include among others, an efficient student support system, production of study materials and a good tutoring system.

The External degree programmess of Makerere University were launched after the recommendation of the University Council in 1984, that external studies leading to degree awards be launched. The proposal to launch the External degree Programmes recommended that the School of Distance & Lifelong Learning , through the Department of Open & Distance Learning , be responsible for the day to day running of the programmes. This meant preparation of the necessary logistics, such as acquiring of study materials, contracting writers of local study materials, and organizing tutoring for on going students, providing support services and communicating important information to students.

The mode of study that the external degree programme has to follow was that of Open & Distance Learning , which entails: use of print and audio study materials, integration of face-to-face sessions and organized study groups through study centers and self directed learning.
