Makerere University established the Institute of Open, Distance and e-Learning (IODeL) in 2015 to spur the development, growth and implementation of technology mediated teaching and learning in the entire University. The IODeL has two mandates – to teach ODeL disciplinary programmes and provide backstopping support services to the entire University community in ODeL related activities. As such the IODeL academic staff are multi-disciplinary in nature and in addition have ODeL pedagogy qualification.
Providing backstopping support services to all university academic units for the professional and smooth integration of e-learning, blended learning, distance education, online education within their academic offerings and research while leveraging the effectiveness of online/eLearning as enablers of 4th and 5th generation ODeL-delivered programmes.
Faculty at IODeL continued to teach on different programmes in the University sucah as ; Bachelor of Commerce External, Bachelor of Education External, Bachelor of Commerce External, Bachelor of Youth Development Work External and Master of Instructional Design and Technology.
The University continued running using a blended teaching and learning mode. IODeL remains instrumental in supporting different units to have the blended teaching and learning mode sustained
The first mandate of IODeL is to develop and teach ODeL disciplinary courses and programmes at Makerere University. This mandate places the IODeL directly under the College of Education and External Studies
IODeL is to provide backstopping support services to all University academic units for the professional and smooth integration of e-learning, blended learning, distance education, online education within their academic offerings and research. This Mandate places the IODeL directly under the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs.
