School of Statistics and Planning

About the School

Dr. James Wokadala, Dean, SSP

The School of Statistics and Planning (SSP) was established as an autonomous Institute within the legal framework of Makerere University in July 1969, to provide facilities for: high level professional training for personnel in Statistics and Applied Economics, to meet the urgent needs of Uganda and other East African countries, as well as other English speaking African countries in the context of formulation and implementation of national plans for economic and social development.  Since 1969, the institute then and now the School, has trained many candidates from these states, and as collaborated with several development agencies as UBoS, World Bank, EAC, ECA, AfDB, FAO among others in hosting several short term regional courses and seminars. The Collegiate arrangement places the SSP under the College of Business and Management Sciences.

The Plan of Operations of the School was signed by accredited representatives of the Government of Uganda, the UNDP and the UN in Kampala on 16 December 1970, with the UN (in association with UNESCO and FAO) being designated as Executing Agency while the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports of the government of Uganda was designated as the Co-operating Agency.

The SSP remains the key stakeholder within the National Statistical System (NSS). Since 1969, the School has trained a total of over 15,000 statisticians from 16 English-speaking African countries up to graduate and post-graduate professional level.  Some of the ex-trainees of the SSP hold key and professionally important posts in the Statistical services of the countries.

The School offers some of the fastest growing and highest demand Statistics and Population-related programs in the World today. Our programs have an established, long history of providing Statistician and Population professionals of “choice” to the Country and to the region.
